Works in Progress?

In order to have Works in Progress, doesn't that mean I have to work on them? As of right now I have 5 current works on the needles....or at least on the cable......(Thank God for Interchangeables!) Now I realize that 5 WIPs are not a lot for many knitters. When I stayed home this wasn't a lot for me either...But now that I am working 5 days a week....I am finding that 5 current WIPs is just plain overwhelming! My Lotus Blossom Tank I started over a year ago! I absolutely love the pattern and would love to have the finished top but apparently not enough because here it is! I have only 2 repeats of the lace pattern done. I had such a hard time getting through the lace repeat even once when I first started this project. I think I frogged the top in the first few rows over a dozen times before it clicked. Now it has sat so long I am worried I will have the same trouble when I pick it up again.
Also another Interweave Knits pattern is my Mandarin Blouse. In my defense I justs started this one about the time I got my job (June/July). I was hoping to finish it quickly but here it is. I am just about up to the arm holes for the tank. This is a supper easy pattern and I truly have no excuse.
I started the Friendship Scarf as a Christmas gift. I just started this one a few weeks ago. I am still not sure who I will give it too but it is a pretty pattern and I am sure it is going to make a great Christmas gift for someone.....if I finish it that is.
Ahhh....an FO???? Well if I only had one foot! This pattern is from More Sensational Knitted Socks. It is the Grapevine Pattern which is such an easy and pretty little lace pattern. I finished the first sock in a weekend and then have finished the cuff and one pattern repeat and there it has sat.....

With all this you would think that I would get motivated to finish something. But no...This week I cast on for a Clapotis Cap to match my Clapotis I made last year. I had almost a full skein of Malabrigo left over and I hope it will be enough to finish the cap. Hopefully this one will become an FO this weekend. I have finished the band around the cap. I need to sew it up and then pick up stitches for the top. Then to see if I will actually wear it. Every winter I search for a hat I will actually wear and have yet to find one. Maybe this will be the year?

Over the summer Madison, decided she needed a purse and a wallet. Her brother had been carrying a wallet from some time and she felt left out when we went shopping. (Never mind that neither of their wallets contain anything which could be used to purchase anything....) Anyways, Madison and I dove into my scrap basket and I created this little purse/tote.
Making the wallet was a bit harder. I searched the internet but couldn't find any patterns for wallets that can carry change. After all she is six. She is more likely to have pennies than paper money or cards. So after about three trys and errors I came up with this little wallet.

The pink bumble bee pattern is a velcro pocket for coins. She can hold two gift cards and there is even a pocket that runs the length of the wallet for paper money. She was thrilled!

See I told you, she was happy! Now she can shop with mommy! Of course, the littlest member of the family then felt left out so Mommy had to whip up a spiderman wallet for him as well.

Resurrecting a long deserted blog.

HELLO...........
What a terrible blogger I have been! I can't believe how long I have deserted this little blog. I have no excuse except a crazy life. Since I have blogged last I have returned to work full time as a therapist, the kids have gone off to school full time! All three of them! YIKES! This has all been a huge adjustment for all of us, since previously we had all been home! The kids are now in Montessori school and they absolutely love it! The littlest is in Primary which is prek/k and the older two are in Elementary which in the 6-9 year old classroom (1st-3rd grade in traditional school).

Besides school and work, I have been knitting, and sewing! And promise to post some of my FOs soon. But since I have nothing to show for myself now I will share one of my favorite new blogs. http://montessoribyhand.blogspot.com Between my fascination with all things Montessori and my obsession with knitting and sewing this is a daily read for me!

Lookie what came in the mail for me!

The packaging was so pretty! So pink and springy! Being January in Chicagoland, I appreciate every bit of spring I can find!

Then I opened it! WOW! Thank you so much Valerie for everything. You have been a great secret pal!
Can you all see everything fun that Valerie sent? (Sorry for the aweful photography!) She sent my kids some adorable little animal buttons. (They send lots of thanks and I had to fight with them to leave them on the cardboard long enough to take the picture!) and some fun soaps for their bathroom. (Madison claimed the flower one right away!) And for me some fabulous Fleece artist sock yarn in an absolutely wonderful colorway, the Diamond Fantasy Shawl pattern and some gorgeous painted knitting needles. (I have decided I need a collection of hand painted needles and spindles! These are so pretty. I am so sorry my horrible picture taking skills cut off the pretty painting) And for the non-knitting goodies. I found a cute little picture frame with spaces for three pictures...(Hmmm...three kids....three soaps...three pictures...a slew of cute pins....Valerie did her homework!) And Yummy dark chocolate truffles! Hubby and I already dipped into these with our Merlot! (Dark Chocolate must accompany a good merlot in this house.) Thanks again Valerie!

Happy Blogiversary to me!

Well...actually I missed it! I missed my own blogiversary. January 16th was my very first post. But with my crazy life....I have been caring for sick kids, homeschooling....oh and the house doesn't clean itself. And I am now in the process of going back to work as a counselor. When I worked previously, I was part of community mental health which is state paid. This time I will be in the private sector, so now I am filling out countless forms for managed care networks. Nightmare!

So in celebration here is my Year In Review! (as stolen from Gimmesanity.)

Knit From Your Stash

I am not sure I am strong enough BUT I have decided to go on a serious yarn diet! I have seen a number of bloggers make the commitment to "Knit from their Stash" and while my stash may not equal the stashes of many other knitters, the start of a new year is a great time to make a point to use up some of the yarn that I have. Currently my yarn stash fills a cedar chest we use as a coffee table in the family room. Truth is that I couldn't fit anymore yarn in this chest no matter how hard I try!

So here are the rules according to Wendy.

1. The Knit-From-Your-Stash-a-Thon will start January 1, 2007 and run through September 30, 2007 -- a period of nine months.

2. We will not buy any yarn during that period, with the following exceptions:

2.a. Sock yarn does not count. What? You think we are made of stone?

2.b. If someone asks for a specific knitted gift that we really and truly do not have the yarn for, we may buy yarn to knit that gift.

2.c. If we are knitting something and run out of yarn, we may purchase enough to complete the project.

2.d. We each get one "Get Out of Jail Free" card -- we are each allowed to fall off the wagon one time.

3. We are allowed to receive gifts of yarn.

4. Spinning fiber of any sort is exempt.

So I am now wondering if I should run FAST to my LYS and BUY, BUY, BUY before Monday! (I guess that would defeat the purpose...)

Christmas Countdown

The kids love counting down to Christmas so this year we found a cute idea for an advent calender at Whip Up and decided to make one. Now the kids have enjoyed keeping track of the days until Christmas.

The only problem is now that I look at this countdown calendar I realize how far behind I am. Today is my last day of crafting and shopping. I have no idea if I am going to get it all done! Top that off with the fact that I am hosting Christmas for my family! Yikes.

I have managed to get some gifts finished...

I made Fetching for my mom who is always complaining of cold hands. Funny thing is last Christmas I was making her a pair of wristwarmers. Well she saw a pattern in one of my books for these and declared how rediculous they were and how she would never wear a pair! Obviously I didn't give her the warmers. Some how she found out I was planning them for her and we kind of had a laugh over it. This year she was diagnosed with scleroderma and her doctor told her she need to buy some fingerless gloves to wear in the house to keep her hands warm! She came back to me laughing and apologizing for being wrong. So it was easy to figure out what to make her this year. And it was a fun, easy, quick knit make with some Cascade 220 from my stash.

Some of my gifts haven't turned out quite as well.

A co-worker and I always meet at Starbucks. She once said that if she had to stop working for the Church or in her field (Social work) she would work at Starbucks. So I picked her up a Starbucks gift card and made her the Coffee Cuff from Knitpicks. It looked pretty good. A little wonky but not too bad. I figured the wonkiness would come out in the felting. It actually got MORE wonky. The top and bottom were very loose and the middle too tight to fit on the cup. Now without time to fix the problem, I gave it too her anyways, making a joke that it was the work and love that went into the gift rather than the gift itself. We then wet the wool and are trying to block it and stretch it back into a decent shape. If we can't make it work I promised her a new one. As wonky as it turned out she is loving the idea of it. And of course the gift card always works.

And then there are the gifts yet to be completed. The ones that mean I shouldn't really be blogging but rather sewing!

This is another Amy Butler pattern from her Institches book. It is a bedside caddy. My brother and sister in law have a small bedroom that they share with their new baby. There isn't enough room for nightstands so I was hoping this might be a solution. So far it looks pretty good. Now if I can only finish it on time!

I finished my first Amy Butler Pattern from In Stitches. I am pretty pleased with it.

I actually finished it a couple weeks ago but put it to use the other day. We spent the day baking Christmas Cookies!

I have been a bad secret pal spoilee. I recieved my package a week or so ago from my fabulous pal and sent her off an email but have failed to show you all the wonderful things she sent and thank her properly. I am so sorry SP!

She sent such wonderful goodies. She themed the gift to warm holiday drinks! Yummy! My kinda theme! I received my new favorite mug that I fight my husband for nightly! Yummy teas,chocolates (dark chocolate my favorite! And Dark Chocolate Truffles! Double yum!) Biscotti! And even chocolate yarn! Yep you read that right! Lorna's Laces Shepherd socks in chocolate colorway! Can't beat that!

This gift truely was appreciated more than you could possibly know. See it arrived the day after my husband and I had one of those talks that aren't too fun to have. We made the decision for me to return to work which will most likely mean we would no longer be able to homeschool and would have to put the kids in school. So now we are in a state of craziness trying to figuring how I can go back to work. We have a tentative plan that hopefully will work out and allow the kids to stay home for the remainder of the year. I am terrified I won't be able to keep up with it all and worried about where we will put the kids in school next year. Public School is affordable but doesn't quite fit our philosophy of education (hence we homeschool.) Montessori gels nicely with our beliefs on learning but is SO expensive. We have an excellent Montessori near by and we are just praying that we will be able to afford this fabulous school.

So without getting further into our current craziness, you can see how receiving this package brought a much needed smile to my face. Thanks again SP! I absolutely love it!

I know you might not believe this but....

I have actually been knitting. Really. I have...Just look! I picked up this little skein of Malabrigo to make a scarf to go with my new black wool coat. The Scrunchable Scarf seemed to be the perfect scarf for this yarn. I am going to absolutely love this scarf. It is so soft.

I also started a gift for a co-worker. We always have our meetings at a local coffee shop and thought she might appreciate a felted coffee cuff and a gift certificate for some coffee (or in her case...tea.) This is my first fair isle pattern and I am pretty pleased how it is turning out. I have some parts that are a little tighter than others but I am hoping that this uneveness will work out in the felting. Hopefully I will finish it this weekend and throw it in the wash.

In addition to knitting, I have also done a little Christmas gift sewing. I found a tutorial for a patchwork craft apron. I thought the kids would love these so I figured out how to scale down the pattern for little people and picked out some fabric I thought they would like. I was surprised at how easy they were even for such a novice like myself. I did make one change. Instead of sewing the ties, I just used grosgrain ribbon. Lazy, I know but hey Christmas is upon us. Carson's is the spiderman and Nathan's is the army camouflage. I still need to sew one up for Madison. I just have way too many cute girly prints to choose from. I'll get to that over the weekend. Maybe I'll even stitch one up for myself!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

We are still in the middle of our first big freeze of the year. I can't stand to be cold. I truly believe I was born in the wrong part of the country. I should be living in Florida or Southern California, Arizona...Anywhere south of here! But instead I am in Chicago. And my crazy husband actually likes this weather. (Well...he doesn't like it as cold as it is now...but he loves the cold and the snow...) What I do like about this time of year is decorating the house. I love the Christmas lights and the tree.

The Christmas stockings in the picture were my first sewing project ever. I was given an old singer sewing machine from a girlfriend whose hubby bought her some fancy new one. So I decided to make Christmas stockings. That was about 4 years ago. Take a peek at the second stocking from the right. Notice anything missing? I made the stockings while I was pregnant with my third child so I made one for him too... The only thing was I didn't know "who" he was yet. So I left the name blank. Now he is 3 1/2 years old and his stocking is still nameless. I notice it every year and think I will get to it...and somehow I put it away each year still nameless. Poor little guy asked this year why his name wasn't on his stocking...Ooops. I promised him the to do it before Santa comes.

Chili Day!

Patty, our Secret Pal 9 hostess, has come up with yet another contest to keep this round of secret pal fun. This time she wants to know about a favorite recipe. My favorite recipes change with the season and my mood. So looking out my window at my children playing in the snow and thinking about the first snow of the year, I had cravings for a Chili Dinner and an evening bundled up by the fireplace with my kids and some hot cocoa! Chili is traditionally the meal I make every year on the first snow fall of the year. So I gathered my ingredients! (Which unfortunately required me to brave the weather but on the bright side I was one of probably four crazy women stupid enough to think grocery shopping might be a good idea.)

My chili uses Morning Star Recipe Crumbles since we don't eat red meat. I have also done it with Ground Turkey but love the ease of the Veggie Crumbles since I don't have to brown the meat. However if you are more of a carnivore than we are you can certainly use ground turkey or even (gasp) ground beef. I also double the recipe so we can eat enjoy left overs for lunch or the next day at dinner.

So are you ready for the recipe?

1 package of Morning Star Recipe Crumbles (or browned gound beef or turkey)
14 oz can of diced tomatoes
14 oz can of tomato sauce
14 oz can of red kidney beans
diced onion
diced green peppers
1-2 cloves of garlic
1-2 Tbs of Chili Powder
2 tsp of Cumin
1 tsp of Oregano
Oyster crackers and Cheddar Cheese

Throw it all (except the crackers and cheese) into the crockpot and slowcook all day. Serve in soup bowls topped with crackers, cheese and any of your other favorite chili toppings. Enjoy!

This would feed my family of 5 without any left overs (which is why I double the recipe.)

My house smells amazing right now. I can't wait to eat!

Do Homeschoolers Have Snow Days?

You bet they do!!!!! Today was our first snow of the year and it was a big one. My husband couldn't even get out of town to make it in to work. He ended up working from home. The kids were simply too excited looking out they window at all the other children playing in the snow and they just looked pitiful. So after a debate that would have made a politician proud, my 7 yo won an early "recess" to play in the snow. I figured after the speech he gave me...he earned it!

I'm an Aunt!!

Well I have been an Aunt for 8 years but this is MY first biological nephew. My 4th nephew all together. (I need to get a niece here at some point but...)

Anyways Ryan James was born at 8:39 am this morning(November 21). He weighes 9 lbs. 5 oz. and is 21 inches long. He is a big boy! Fun thing is he looks JUST like my oldest! (Who looks just like my brother who is Ryan's father so I guess he gets the credit.)
While I was waiting for the sitter to come so I could go visit him, I whipped these little shoes up. (Sorry for the lighting. They really are cute.)

I found the tutorial at Stardust Shoes and thought they were the cutest little little shoes. It was actually an easy pattern. That is it should have been. But I had been at the hospital until 1 am the night before waiting and finially decided to go home to bed. Got to bed by 3 am to have my lovely children wake me up at 6:30 am. So I was TIRED. Not to mention anxious for my sitter to arrive. I finished the first shoe and went to admire my work when I realized I had sewn the sole on upside down or rather inside out. So I ripped it apart. Then I sewed the toe on the heel and the heel on the toe. It took me a while to figure out why it didn't look right. So I had to rip it out again. Third time was a charm though. I am pretty pleased with how they turned out but I am going to have to make a few more pairs. We held Ryans foot up to these shoes (pattern says 6 months). Ryan is sure not going to get 6 months out of these shoes! He may be lucky to get 6 weeks. Now I need to figure out how to adjust the pattern to make a larger shoe.

SP9 Dishcloth Contest

Shower Scrunchie

The other night I was bored with all of my current WsIP so I decided to do something quick and easy.

The scrunchie was made with left over Lion Cotton that I had from a face cloth I made. I found the pattern here and thought it looked like a one evening project I could watch TV while doing. I think I finished it in about an hour or so. So now I am ready to get back to Christmas Gift Knitting.

Knitting and Sewing

As I have said earlier, I have had a renewed interest in sewing and here is the project that kick started this resurrection of a former hobby.

Our babysitter has been asking for a felted bag. Since her 18th Birthday is Sunday, I figured I better get knitting. Sophie took me just two evenings to knit, but has yet to be felted. Yesterday I made a trip to JoAnn's and picked up some fabric to line the bag. I am going to through the bag in the washer this afternoon. (Once I catch up on my laundry first.) Then I will get started on the lining. I am hoping my sewing skills aren't too rusty. My machine has spend quite a while collecting dust on a shelf in my craft closet. Now that I am dusting it off, I plan on giving it some good use. While at JoAnn's I picked up a few extra's to make a couple projects from Amy Butler's Book that I reviewed in my previous post.
I can't wait to get started. I am really very excited about this. (My husband is groaning about another hobby to suck up my time and our money....He got over it when I pointed out that the fabric is *hopefully* meant for Christmas gifts. We will have to see how they turn out first.)

Book Review: In Stitches

Recently I have been thinking about dusting off my sewing machine and putting it to some use. So yesterday as I was browsing the craft sections at Barnes and Noble I found this great book.
I think this book maybe just what I need to get sewing again. There are a number of fabulous projects and the fabrics that Designer Amy Butler uses are wonderful. She organizes the projects by the room it is meant for. For example "Living Room" projects include a quilted throw, and pillows for the floor as well as the sofa. She also has a kitty tunnel I am sure my feline friends would enjoy! Included in the kitchen is a fabulous vintage looking waist apron, that I might even use! And potholders that remind me of the ones my grandmother had in her kitchen when I was a little girl. One of the bedroom projects is a bedside organizer that fits between the mattress and boxspring. It is meant to hold a book, pens, your glasses, an ipod, magazines, and I suppose anything else you might need close by your bed. My nightstand always has so much on it that I can barely find the nightstand. This will be my first project and one I think I may make for a number of people on my Christmas list. Other Bedroom projects include PJ bottoms, a sleeping mask and a duvet cover. There are projects for the Bathroom, Office, and a number of fun bags including one that she calls a checkbook clutch that looks beyond me at present but I love so much I am definately going to have to work my way up to it.

Secret pal and swaps

The mailman has been busy bring fabulous packages to my house. (I would have shown you these earlier but blogger has been giving me fits. Bad Blogger!) Any ways check out these fabulous swaps I have gotten this last week!
First one is from my Secret Pal. She did such a great job! It is definately a terrific package. Just look at how she packaged everything. It was so pretty right out of the box! Everything came either wrapped in pretty tissue paper or in this fabulous little autumn tote bag. (Just perfect for a pair of socks on the go.)
Even before I took these pretty packages out of the box, I noticed this fabulous smell. A wonderful baked apple scented envelope made the package smelled delicious! She also included two skeins of pretty autumn red sock yarn, autumn leaves magnets, fall stickers, a pretty little pillow, and yummy chocolate that lasted all of about two seconds after this picture was taken. Pal you made some wonderful choices. Thank you so much!
The next two packages I received are both from my Stitch Marker Exchange partners.
The first is from Linda S. She made the prettiest blue stitch markers. One had an elastic loop that can be used to hold the needles together when not is use. More yummy chocolate! Stickers, a magnetic notepad and wonderful bath salts and lotion.
And from Linda K. sent a completely homemade package: a set of 7 beautiful green beaded stitch markers, a knitting charm, a wonderful decoupaged journal, a cute little pin with a vintage looking picture of a little boy on it and a great hank of handspun yarn! I LOVE handspun. She also had a note card that she created that somehow did not make it into the picture but you will have to trust that it as fabulous as the other hand-created projects she sent. She is definately a terrific artist. Thank you, Linda!

I am pretty happy with it. I used Mmmalabrigo is "dusty." It took three skeins and a smidgen from a 4th. So I have almost a full skein of this color way left. It is super soft and it just begs to be snuggled up in. My only thing is I am not sure I am going to use this. I so wanted to when I started. But now I have tried wearing it as a scarf...too bulky. And as a wrap over my coat, it is still pretty bulky. The weather still isn't cold enough to use it so maybe when it gets colder....that bulky wrap will look just perfect. Right now it is hanging in my coat closet and I pet it everytime I get something from the closet.

So now what should I do with almost a full skein of Mmmmalabrigo? Mittens maybe?

Socktoberfest Progress

Socktoberfest is half way through and I am about half way through on my project. I am using Queen Kahuna's Crazy Heels and Toes to modify the Jaywalker pattern. I am about an inch past the heels, so I am definately in the home stretch. Now just to find the time to finish this and my countless other projects.

Does the yarn look familar. Yep it was frogged from the Size 0 Trekking Socks I started back in January! Now I have to say I had gotten some more progress on them. I had turned the heel and was picking up stitches when my then 2 yo decided he wanted to 'knit.' It took my forever just to untangle the mess he made. The socks were, needless to say, history!

While I am on the topic of Socktoberfest, Lolly had posted a series of Socktoberfest related questions way back in the beginning of the month. So I figured I might as well answer them...

When did you start making socks? Did you teach yourself or were you taught by a friend or relative? or in a class?

Probably just a couple months after starting to knit. I learned to knit almost 2 years ago in the spring and that summer I made my first pair of socks for my son. Like most things I taught myself.

What was your first pair? How have they "held up" over time?

They have held up great. I didn't have too many problems. The socks were a little big on him but when you are knitting for a growing 6 yo that isn't always a terrible thing. He still wears them every chance he gets. (Although I can't stand the yarn...he choose it so he is happy.)

What would you have done differently?

I can't think of anything. I think it was a great experience. I started with a sport/dk weight yarn so it made the stitches easy to see and work with. And it was great too that I was knitting for little feet. It was easier to finish and feel like I had accomplished something.

What yarns have you particularly enjoyed?

I LOVE soft yarns to work with. So far my favorite has been the alpaca socks. The pattern wasn't exciting but I absolutely love the feel of the alpaca. And the technique is now my favorite. These have been my best fitting socks to date.

Do you like to crochet your socks? or knit them on DPNs, 2 circulars, or using the Magic Loop method?

I don't think I would like crocheted socks, although my mom has made some and she loves them....My kids are all getting crocheted socks from her for Christmas so I can decide then. As I have said I love The Crazy Heels and Toes Technique which is done with two socks on two circulars. I tried the Magic Loop method and didn't care for it. DPN's are fine but I really prefer the circular needles.

Which kind of heel do you prefer? (flap? or short-row?)

How many pairs have you made?

I may have lost count but I think I am at about 10 pairs.

Look what I found in my mailbox last night. Another Stitch Marker Exchange package!

Check out all these yummies. Five very pretty stitchmarkers. I love the soft green color. Homemade DPN's in a size 10 1/2 with an other pretty red marker decorating the bow. Sock Wars: The Evidence

Well I realized in looking through my recent posts that somehow I have neglected to report on the outcome of sock wars (at least from my point of view.) Well if you remember my last sock wars post, I was resigned to my demise. But I decided that I ought to at least try to take someone out with me! So Monday morning, I ran to Fringe and picked up two balls of a yummy soft cashmere/merino blend and started knitting. I was surprised at how quickly the pattern went in a DK weight yarn. By Wednesday, I had these socks finished, photographed, packaged.
Wednesday afternoon, I dropped these socks off at the post office and returned to find a package with these socks inside.

So I managed to get off a fatal shot just in the knick of time. I love the colorway. This was such a fun game. I am glad I decided to make a go of it.

Secret Pal 9 Contest

Secret Pal 9 Questions

I had so much fun with Secret Pal 8 that I decided to join SP 9! Here is the questionaire along with a few questions my pal added to the end.

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/S to knit with? What fibers do you
Absolutely *not* like?

I LOVE natural fibers. I am not crazy about acrylics but will use an acrylic blend on occasion for a child's item (My first choice is a superwash wool.)

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

My favorite Needles are my new knitpicks option needles. So those are stored in the case that came with the set. I also store my cable needles and tapestry needles in a pocket in this case. My DPNs and crochet hooks are made in a fabric roll that I made.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider
Your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I have been knitting for almost two years. I taught myself by reading books and KnittingHelp. I would say I am probably an intermediate knitter. Since I have yet to truely give some of the advanced techniques a fair try. I am planning on tackeling some Faire Isle this winter. I am also fairly new to lace knitting and haven't tried Entralac.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list? Is it up to date?

Yep. And yes it is current.

5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products, etc.)

Not picky. I don't like overpowering florals though.

We are a bit of health nuts over here (sorry about that). I do love organic dark chocolate! (Loaded with antioxidants!!!!! Thank God chocolate is good for you!)

I like earthy colors...Browns, greens, rustycolors, burgundies. I really don't *hate* any colors but I am not crazy about pastels. Oh and I guess I can't stand bright neony garish colors so I guess I do hate some colors. But one doesn't see these colors too often for good reason!

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

I am married with three children (7,5,3) and two cats!

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

Scarves and mittens. I really don't like too many ponchos (there has been a rare pattern that I thought I might like but not too many.) I love the look of hats but think I look silly in them.

SOCKS!!!!! Up until now small projects have suited me best. But I have started eyeing a number of sweaters that I think I may need to try my hand at!

A baby cardigan for my nephew to be. A pair of Jaywalkers. And Tubey from Knitty. I have the lotus blossom tank on hold right now. I figured I would pick it up again towards the spring.

Never Say Die

Sock Wars Started Friday. I know for most this would be the best time to engage in sock warfare. The whole weekend ahead of them. However this stay at home warrior is busier on the weekends than most. I was barely home this weekend at all. And the little time I was at home was mostly spent sleeping! So last night I discovered that I had a little time to knit. So I dived into my arsenal (stash) only to discover that I not only didn't have the right ammunition (DK weight yarn) but my not to appropriate weapon (US size 4 needles....I have US3 and US5...but not US4.) So I am psyching myself up for a run to the LYS, when I receive an email from my assassin....The bomb (socks) has been launched!!!! So thus ends my brief time as a Sock Soldier. Gone before I even got started...

On a good note....Great way to get even with her! She will be receiving untouched DK yarn and will have to start from scratch! That'll get her!

Making Music

Or at this point...NOISE! But take a peak at what my "new" hand-me-down.

Hubby's cousin decided she wanted it out of her house! She told us the piano was almost 100 years old but as I was looking inside for dates and such, the oldest date I can find is a dated signature from the mid 1940's....So I am not sure if that is the signature of the artisan or of a tuner. So it is at least 60 years old...but maybe more. We still need to have it tuned which we won't be able to do until October but that unfortunately hasn't stopped the kids from "making music." It does need a little work. The finish needs a little attention and it is missing the knobs to close up the keyboard. Then bench was also missing, the one in the picture a free organ bench that needs cutting down to size and refinishing but it should work out.

I told you I have been knitting. This is a little cardigan I started for my nephew to be that we are expecting in November. The pattern and yarn are from Tess Yarns. The pattern is adorable and I love working with the yarn. It is so soft and being superwash wool sock yarn, it's washable! Which is a must for me with any baby knit. Babies are too messy for hand-wash only in my humble opinion....As far as that goes...kids up until the age of adolescents are too messy for hand-wash only!

"Kitty and Knitty" Update

Thank you all for the well wishes for Ophelia. Life has been crazy between a sick cat, work and school starting the last few weeks, just breathing feels like it needs to be scheduled!
Ophelia is doing well and if she could she would thank you all for the comments and emails. She was actually a pretty miserable kitty for a while. She had to wear one of those vet collars for three weeks while her stitches were in. She HATED it!

The stitches and the collar have been gone for a few days now and she is a much happier girl! Her ear is now wrinkled and crooked...but it fits her personality better!

I haven't completed any knitting projects lately, although I have been working on them. I am just about half way through Clapotis. And I cast on for some Jaywalkers Socks in Trekking as well as a Baby Cardigan for my nephew we are expecting in November.

I did however complete a little crocheted bag. It took me just part of an afternoon and I made it from some left over Plymouth Encore I had in my stash.

I needed a little bag for my wireless mouse and memory stick. The pattern is from One Skein. I altered the pattern slightly to make it the appropriate size.
I make have to make a couple more in different sizes. I could use one for my make up....a tiny one for my MP3 player....I am sure I can come up with some other uses as well.

Socks a la Queen Kahuna

Ophelia is at the animal hospital for her ear surgery. I feel so sad for her. Poor thing is just miserable. The Vet said she should be able to come home tonight. Can you believe they asked if we wanted pain medication for her? I am amazed people would consider not relieving their pain to save a few dollars. We can not afford any part of this surgery but I am definately not going to allow her to continue in pain or be in pain after the surgery is completed. I am just shocked! Anyways I can't wait until my baby kitty comes home tonight. I should be hearing this afternoon from the vet.

Now onto knitting news....

I finally finished them! It only took me forever because it was pretty much only worked on when I was out of the house since most of my home knitting time was reserved for the afghan. But they are done! And I am really pleased with them. They are probably my best fitting socks I have made yet! And the yarn is super yummy (misty alpaca!) They feel absolutely fabulous to wear. (Of course it is still in the 80's everyday here so it will be a while until I am wearing them.)
I just cast on some trekking yarn (from an abandoned sock project started last Christmas...Baby got to it...Long story.) And am almost to the point of starting the gusset increase. I modified the Jaywalking pattern so it could be knit toe up using this technique. I will let you know how it is going.!

Unhappy Kitty

My poor baby kitty has a boo boo ear. Yesterday I noticed Ophelia was unusually quiet and clingy. Then as she was sitting on my lap I noticed her right ear was floppy. When I looked it was hugely swollen and feverish. We took her to the vet and it turns out she has a hematoma which requires surgery to treat. Poor Baby Kitty. She is just miserable. We take her Tuesday and she will be able to come home Wednesday. I just feel so sad for her.

I got my final Secret Pal gift and it was as fabulous as all my other packages. I am really lucky! Take a peek at all I got!

If you remember my Hint Gift from my last Secret Pal package it was two skeins of sock yarn.....I guessed socks and I was right. My Pal, Cath sent me a great sock package. She sent a skein of Lion Brand magic stripes for the kids. What makes this fun is that the first pair of socks I made were out of this yarn in this same colorway. And I still wear them! So the kids and I will have matching socks! She also sent 2 skeins of Sock Landscapes from Knit Picks. And a ball of Fleece Artist Merino Sock yarn is such a pretty soft colorway. I am excited about all the socks I can make now!!! She also included two pretty stitch markers that would be perfect for sock knitting and a handmade sock bag for sock knitting on the go. The sock pattern is great. I now need to decide which yarn to use for it! And then as an extra she sent the new glampyre pattern!!! I LOVE this pattern.
Oh...and check this out. That cute sock bag is reversible! VERY cool!

Cath, you have been absolutely the best secret pal! I am so glad we were paired. I feel like the best gift I have received through secret pal, is meeting my new friend! (I know. My husband tells me I am sappy.)

Stitches Weekend!

Stitches Midwest was this weekend and this was my first time attending. Saturday the Illinois member of Knitting Help (Andrea,Kelly, Hilde, Julie and I) and Angelia and Marce even flew in from out of state!) all met up at Stitches. Walking through the booths was overwhelming. It was complete sensory overload! So much Yarn! I did manage to narrow down my choices some.

I bought two skeins of Super Sock and Baby from Tess's Designer Yarns. One I plan on using for socks for me! And the other for a baby cardigan for my nephew who is arriving in November. I found some beautiful roving at Angora Cottage. I just can't wait to spin that up! I bought a skein of Regia sock yarn (can't remember where but they were running an awesome end of show special Sunday when I went back with my mom!) And I also bought a ball of cashmere lace and another of the softest cotton from Habu Textiles. These yarns were amazing! They had so many unique textures. I probably could have spent my whole budget there and then some! Their yarns are beautiful! I also picked up a few patterens and and a book Knitting Nell. The author was there and signed a copy for Madison. (Shhhhh....She will be getting the book, a skein of yarn and some chunky needles with it for Christmas!)
My Mom and I went back Sunday and she had a great time. She crochets and said she could never learn to knit...Well after an hour learn to knit class...she is now a knitter!
Saturday was also a Bridal Shower for my Sister in Law's Sister who is getting married next month. My mother and I made her an afghan. This is a never ending project as those of you who have finsihed an afghan know. Anyways the blanket ended up a big hit. Here is a picture of the finished blanket and matching pillows waiting on my sofa to be folded and wrapped.

About half the squares were crocheted by my mom and I knit the other half. I wasn't sure how it would turn out with the blanket being a mix of crochet and knit, but I think it turned out beautiful. I am quite proud of it. (I won't be doing any other afghans any time soon though.)

Yarn Mail

I got ymail! Two packages!! Lookie what I got! The first one is my Traveling Women's Swap from Knit the Classics. My secret "traveler" was Christine. Check out the goodies. Christine sent the book "Education Alice" by Alice Steinback. I can't wait to curl up with this one! She also sent two skeins of Blue Sky Alpaca! Something elses wonderful to "curl up with!" Chocolate was included in the package however at the time of this photographing it was returning to its solid form in the fridge! The package was delivered on a 100 degree day! My husband and I enjoyed it later that evening...Yumm! Thank you, Christine! They were awesome choices!

This next package is from Kim, my Stitch Marker Exchange Partner. What a fun package to receive...Firstly I was amazed by how fast Kim was in getting this out! I am so sorry, Kim, that I have not been as speedy! It will be coming soon though.

This package is great! Thank you so much, Kim! I received two packages of spinning fiber. Both are llama and they are so soft! I couldn't wait to get my fingers into them! She sent my two sets of stitch markers in a cute little red pouch!

How do you like my new look? Pretty good, huh? A few weeks ago I stumbled on Karen's Blog and noticed that she designed graphics for knitters blogs on the side. Well since you couldn't get more boring than my plain white blog, I decided to have her make me a banner and button! Didn't she do an awesome job? I decided to re-title the blog "Fiber Therapy" since I had been a full time Therapist before kids and still dabble in counseling and mental health in my part time role as Support & Recovery Director at my church. Being a busy mom, I often need my own escape and all things fiber have pretty much been my therapy...so with that theme, she was off and running. Thanks Karen, It looks great!

Cake and Presents

The Birthday Princess had a wonderful time at her party last weekend. She had 4 princesses and 5 knights in attendence (two of which were her brothers.) The children made crowns, sheilds and necklaces. And they all fought the pinata dragon (We have warrior princesses here!) And the haul of goodies she got was amazingly girly. She was loving it!
But I got a few presents myself!!!
Last week, The kids and I meet two of my knitting friends from Knitting Help Andrea and Julie and her children at The Fine Line for some yarn shopping! What a fabulous place. It specializes in teaching fiber arts as well as pottery and some drawing and painting. The kids and I went poking in the weaving room. I am fascinated by weaving and those huge looms just look overwhelming to me. I would LOVE to take a weaving class there to demystify the art of weaving a bit. Attached to the art school is a fiber shop. They have an amazing selection of yarns! It was so tempting to take a huge bag home with me! But remembering my yarn diet I decided to buy this instead:

I figured spinning fiber wasn't yarn yet, right! So it didn't count. The spindle is a louet student spindle that can be spun as both a high and a low whorl. I can't remember what the fiber is but it looked pretty. It is a pencil roving and after being assured that it was spinnable without falling apart I decided I had to get it!
And just to add more goodies to my stash...the mailman brought me my Secret Pal Goodies!

Check out those awesome goodies! Catherine has got to be the best pal. (Yes I know who she is...she told me.......)Remember my Hint Gift from my last package. The single skein of Cascade and two patterns that take only one skein....Well if I were on my toes (which I wasn't) I would have figured out that the One Skein was the clue...This package was themed from the book One Skein. My Package included the book as well as a single skein each of Classic Yarn Cashsoft Baby Dk in blue and one in tan (I have a nephew on the way to arrive in November so that will get put to good use!), a skein of Baby Silk in Black and a skein of Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud in Autumn. Catherine is also a Texan so she included a Texas shaped sucker for each one of the kiddlets! (They are very appreciative btw.) Two packages of Texas Coffee and a package of Spicy hot Texas Style Peanuts (That my husband gobbled down immediately!!!) She also included another hint gift that she graciously allowed me to open right away. (Thanks for that!) It was two skeins of Knit Picks Sock Garden in Morning Glory. So now to take our guesses as to the theme of the last box...Hmmm....is socks too obvious?

I am working at getting the house ready for a herd of 5-7 year olds that will be stampeding my house tomorrow afternoon. We are having my 5 yo dd's Princesses and Knights birthday party and I am very much NOT ready for this. I always get stressed out over the kids parties. Why do I let that happen? So instead of doing something constructive, here I am.
I got an email today from Jen Logan, my Secret Pal 8 hostess. She is having a contest to keep participants blogging...so of course I have to do my part! (I can always clean the house later!) We each need to post the answers to some question on our blog for a chance to win a skein of STR! Whoo Hoo! So here is mine:

1. What is your favorite season of the year and why?

Summer, hands down! I LOVE the HOT weather. (I absolutely hate to be cold!)Summer is when the kids are outside playing and I get to be outside gardening. I love that we don't need to mess with hats and gloves and coats and all of that! I love that we get to do less school! We are homeschoolers and so summer is when we get to kick back and take it easy. We still do some work but much less and just the basics.

2. Summer is hot. What do you knit in the summer?

Socks are my favorite thing to knit anytime of the year! I love to knit socks. But I also work on pretty much anything. I usually don't do huge projects anyways....I am a bit ADD when it comes to knitting projects and dont have the attention span to complete huge things. However this summer my mom and I got the bright idea to make an afghan for a bridal shower this fall. We are each making squares to seam into the afghan. This has been KILLING me! I have 5 more squares to do and less than a month to do it in! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

3. If money was no object.....what would you buy at the LYS?

Well after I bought sock yarn in each brand/colorway they carry....Hmm. I am still thinking I must own some type of shrug or cardi in Mmmalabrigo. I don't know I guess the short answer is as much yarn as I can manage to carry home.

4. What are some activities that have become family traditions for your family?

One of the kids favorites and easiest traditions is the Candle of Honor...I don't even know where I came up with this idea, but we have a candle that sits on our kitchen table and if one of the kids does something special or behaves extra nice, etc...we light the candle in their honor during dinner. They LOVE this.

5. What is the weather right now?

Knitting with Friends

I got an entire day to get away from responsibilities and knit with friends!

A number of wonderful knitting friends from Knitting Help got together at Mosaic Yarn Studio in Des Plaines, IL for our quasi-regular knit together! This was a largest group yet. We had 10 knitters from the Chicagoland area...well 9...Sara Jayne came all the way from DesMoines, Iowa!

Not only was a great time had by all but I managed to pick up 3 skeins of South West Trading Co's Bamboo in Plum for the Lotus Blossom Tank from Interweave! Yeah (Sorry I'm too lazy at the moment to take a picture and hook up the camara.)

The felting cure?

I decided to try and use my first homespun yarn. Now as far as yarn goes this stuff barely qualifies...yet I made it with my two little hands. So of course I have to find something I could use it for. It is super think and barely spun in some places and super thin and over spun in others, so I decided I could only use it for felting. After all felting hides all things, right? Well I hope so. I started on a booga bag last weekend....

It is really AWEFUL to knit with. It's pretty scratchy stuff.

I'm wondering if felting will help this? Or is it "unhelpable?" Stay tuned and we'll find out...

Felting & Spinning Fiber

While reading on Knitting Help Forums, I found this fabulous Link for felting around a bar of soap. Looking at all the great mountain of suds this produces and thinking of the mess it would make, I know immediately that this was a FABULOUS project for the kids and I on a hot day OUTSIDE!!! How fun does that look?!?! So I went looking for somewhere I can order just a handful of fiber is a variety of colors. I found this Ebay Seller and bought some fiber. Look at all the pretty colors!

I can't wait to try this out with the kids this weekend! While I was browsing this nice lady's ebay store, I couldn't help but pick up some spinning fiber for me.

Doesn't it just look yummy. Socks I am thinking. Now if I can only spin it up nice enough to actually use for socks....a challenge for me to be sure! The name of this seller's farm is Jehovah Jireh Farms. Jehovah Jireh means "The Lord provides." And I guess the Lord wanted to provide me with some extra practice because ebay slightly overcharged me with shipping (I honestly wouldn't have even noticed it was so slight) and Amy, the owner of the farm, emailed me to tell me she would send along a little extra to compensate... Well here is what she sent.

It's just a few ounces of each...just enough to fill one bobbin. But isn't it pretty? I have already spun up the orange one and it is fun to watch the colors as I'm spinning. I have only worked with undyed fibers before so this was new to me. I still need to ply it and will show you pictures later.

Mysteries Abound

So are you up for a mystery or two? I love mysteries. So I joined a couple knitalongs that offer a bit of mystery. One is the Monthly Dishcloth Knitalong . I know your thinking "Dishcloths?", but this one is really fun. They do two knitalongs a month. You are given in advance the color of cotton yarn to purchase. Then daily you are given about 8-10 lines. It is fun to watch the pattern emerge and take guesses as to what it is. Here are the last two kal's we did. The star we did at the end of June and I was able to guess that one pretty quick. The other I don't know how well you can see. It is a dolphin jumping out of the water. This one kept me guessing until almost the end. It was knit from the top down so I was trying to guess upside down. Once I got to the bottom and started the water I figured it out.

I have another mystery that needs solving as well. I was good. I managed to wait until July to open my Hint Gift from my SP.

She sent me one skein of Cascade 220 and two patterns: Topi and Sophie. She also sent a note along telling me I could go ahead and use the skein to make one of the patterns or wait to see what she sends next! Hmmm.....
Speaking of mysteries. As you all know I am as much a book-a-holic as I am a yarn addict. So when I found the Whoduknit Knitalong. This is going to be set up just like the Knit the Classics Knitalong that I have been a part of recently. Fun!

My Rabbit Salad

I love to garden. I love to watch a garden grow and see the colors of the flowers. Our last house had such a nice garden. I would sit outside and read and just be near my garden. Then we moved. Our new house is sitting on what use to be a farmers field just a few years ago. I guess this field has been home to a large and very hungry community of rabbits. Every thing I plant they eat.

First it was my hosta...It has been chomped to the ground.

I decided to add these pretty plants (Can't for the life of me tell you what they are.) And for a while they seemed safe. Not too bad....

And then this morning I find that the one furthest from the front door has fallen victim to my bunny friends.

Now my lilies are also losing the battle of the bunnies. My 3 yo found this poor chewed lily on the ground by my back door...(brave little vermin) and brought me the "pretty."

I am about ready to dig it all out and admit defeat...

I know everyone has been saying so much about how soft and how fabulous Malabrigo is...but I avoided it. After all if it is really as good as everyone says it must cost a fortune. So when I saw it at my LYS and it was only $11 a skein (not cheap but definately not expensive either), I thought "Well, they must be exaggerating. How great can it be?" Still I picked up 3 skeins thinking I might make a felted bag or something. The skeins felt pretty soft and I liked the colorway...so what they heck. My Malabrigo sat for a couple weeks just looking pretty in my basket. Last night I decided I wanted to make Clapotis. I have been planning on making this since I first saw it but wantd a soft yarn to do it in. So I cast on...

It is like knitting with a cloud! Of course you already know this and are nodding your head thinking, "Finally, she gets it!" I looked over at my husband and swore I may never knit with another yarn again. He looked at me as if he might have to have me committed. I've decided that I simply must have some type of cardigan or shrug made with this. I actually can't imagine how I have survived this long without one.

My Green Gables

I have a very good reason why I haven't been posting. I have been busy knitting! I cast on for Green Gables Monday night as a bit of stress reducing knitting. (See my previous post!) And I was done Saturday afternoon! I wore it to church Sunday! Thanks SP! It was a great project!

That is about all I can say about today is that we survived it! All while on a routine trip to Trader Joe's, my 7 yo decided to jump up on the side of a full cart of groceries. This tipped over the cart pinning him underneath it and dumping the 3yo out of the cart, hitting his head on the wall on the way down. An ambulance was called and the kids got a ride to the hospital. We were pretty worried that the 7 yo may have broken his leg (he didn't, thank God.) And the baby's bump on the noggin wasn't serious. We are just thankful to be home, and in one piece.

Trader Joe's has been wonderful...Even offered to deliver the groceries that I had in my cart (we live 45 minutes away!)

We are now "de-stressing" with pizza, videos and a quiet night of knitting for mom.

My secret pal must be a mind reader. I have no doubt she is! Check out this amazing package I just got in the mail.

She sent me 8 balls....yes 8 of Patons Encore in the prettiest softest green. And the pattern for Green Gables! I have been eyeing this pattern and trying to be strong! (I'm tellin' you...a mind reader!) I have to tell you, S.P., you are not only the best SP a knitter could have...but my DH is thrilled with you as well...(after all, we all know I would not have been able to hold off for too long!)
Now you would think this was enough but NO! She also sent 8 balls of Knit Picks Crayon. Now my DS is also loving you because I had made his sister the heart hoodie from knit picks. Ever since the pattern arrived and he learned there was a car motif he has been begging me to make him a hoodie too! How did you know?
However I am now wishing I had mind reading abilities because look what else she sent! A Do-Not-Open-'til-July Hint Gift! Torture! I will be strong though. I will not fall to temptation!

An Afternoon of Alpacas

A couple weekends ago my husband, kids and I met up with Julie and her daugher as well as Kelly from the KnittingHelp Forums and her neice to visit an alpaca farm by her house. Julie had the lucky timing to find this little farm just minutes after the birth of a new baby alpaca. Susan, the owner, was very welcoming and agreed to allow us to bring our children for a visit. I can believe how beautiful these animal are. They have the friendlies faces and make the sweetest little humming sound. Most of them had been recently shorn. You could still see the lines the shears had made.
See that adorable little brown girl. She was the new baby born just a week before our visit. She is so pretty.
Look at her. Isn't she cute? And mama was so attentive. She was always right by baby. But even she was friendly. I would have imagined her taking baby off away from us but she stayed up close.
The kids just loved them. (Well until the found the hammock in the back yard...) Since I have never spun alpaca, I had to ask Susan what she does with the fleece. She had boxes of their freshly shorn fleeces she was kind enough to show me. She is having them sent out the be prepared and is planning on holding a fiber workshop at her house in a month or so! I can't wait!

Kool-Aid and Kids.

Remember my first handspun hanks that I posted about a little while back? Well I decided to try and use kool-aid to dye them. I used two shades of pink and a lime green (I think pink lemonade and lime but I can't remember the third.) Here are the hanks in their bath after microwaving them.

My favorite helpers (minus one who thought video games were a better way to occupy his time...Silly Boy!) They had a great time and want more yarn to dye up.

Please pay no attention to the mess in the sink...

I have them wound up into balls but haven't taken a picture yet...Will give you something to anticipate. (I'm sure you are all on the end of your seats now!) The yarn is pretty scratchy and would not be a good choice for a garment so I am thinking of using it for a felted bag to be given as a gift to the young lady who babysits for us. I'll take more pictures as I get a bit of it knitted up.

Queen Kahuna Socks

Here is my lates work in progress... pair of socks using Queen Kahuna's Crazy Toes & Heels technique for knitting two socks at the same time on two circular needles. I have to say I am loving this technique. I have been suffering from second sock syndrome recently. By the time I get around to the second sock I have already forgotten some of the details from the first sock, so the best I can hope for is that the second sock comes close to the first. So far this technique seems like a winner.

Coffee Heaven

Remember I promised to tell you about the coffee we received from Boca Java.

Just look at all that! When I opened up the box it smelled so heavenly! I don't know who was more excited about it...my husband or me! As a matter of fact, notice in the picture one of the packages is already opened? My dear husband showed all the restraint of a 5 year old and ripped into Pajama Passion before I was even able to arrange the picture!
Anyways, I don't think I have ever really 'fessed up to my lazy side. Well, lazy might be a bit harsh. But rarely do I brew coffee at home. I like to get my coffee from the baristas at some of the better coffee houses around town. It's just easier. You don't need to grind the bean, or clean up the grinder or the pot....just enjoy. And usually it is a better pot of coffee. Well, let me tell you that is all achangin' at our house! This coffee is that good! Ya know how some coffees have the bitter after taste to it? (one I have actually grown to like but my hubby can't stand.) Not this one. I just brewed up our last pot of Pajama Passion! I am about to leave for my women's Friday morning bible study and I am wondering if the hostess would be offended if I brought my own coffee....

I have neglect this blog for a week. Shame on me. In my defense I have been busy....just not busy knitting. As a matter of fact I didn't even GET STARTED on the Mother's day knitting I had planned to do. So all the moms in my family received non-knitted gifts. Isn't that sad!

So what can I say for myself? Well I really have been busy! I am a support and recovery director at my church. We have support groups that run three times a year. Our Kick off of new groups is this tonight so I am busy promoting, organizing, etc. This promotion had me filling in for my pastor on Sunday so I could talk about Support and Recovery from Stage. Since this is all new to me having rarely been on stage before at church and certainly never having been "pastor" this was quite an undertaking for me. (and I don't think I want to rush back up there!!! Although it did go well!)

Also I have some pretty cute pictures to show you. (As soon as I get my camara plugged in that is!) My 4 yo daughter was in her very first dance recital! She was adorable. I promise to post pictures!

I also have to show you the huge amount of coffee that has arrived at my house! I was very impressed and the smell was amazing just opening up the box! Naturally we had to dive right in a try some. My husband picked Pajama Passion and it is yummy! I am a coffee snob (Hmm...Coffee snob...yarn snob...I am beginning to see a pattern!) And I really like this coffee. As a matter of fact...I think I am going to brew some up right now!

I just learned that I have a box full of coffee on its way to my house as we speak. Boca Java has a number of coffee blends that they have made available for a select number of bloggers to review. Spinning and Secret Pals

I finially finished spinning up the huge bag of corriedale roving that I got with my wheel forever ago. I definately need to find more time for spinning, but between homeschooling, my job at church, running the house and knitting....well, you get the picture. Speaking of pictures, here are all the hanks I managed to spin up!

Over all not too bad. Still a bit uneven in places and I am still tending to overspin in some places and lots of slubs. But hopefully that will improve. Now I need to dye it up. I have a bunch of koolaid packets that I think I will try to use to dye it. Then to figure out what to make from it. Since it is so uneven maybe I will use it for a felting project!

My next fiber to try is a bag of Lincoln/Silk I got from The Fold in Marengo when we picked up my wheel.

Changing the topic... Secret Pal 8 is finally underway. I am so excited about this you would think I was an 8 year old at Christmas! About a week ago I got an email from my secret pal who managed to beg her match early! And yesterday, I receieved my match...who I promptly sent an email out! Fun stuff!!!

I finished my first crochet project! This scarf is from the new SNB Happy Hooker

I am actually pretty pleased with it. It took me about two nights to finish. I was so surprised at how quick crochet is compared to knit.

Now I am working on a stripped tank top...also from Debbie Stoller's book.

This one is taking me a little longer than the other but the thread is so thin and I haven't been working on it very consistently. I am taking a break for some Mother's day knitting and will hopefully get back to it soon.

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

I love natural fibers...pretty much any of them. I am not crazy about acrylics but will use an acrylic/wool blend for stuff for my kids so it will be easier to wash. I can't stand novelty yarns.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

I have a needle roll that I sewed up to hold my dpns, my crochet hooks and my addis.

3. How long have you been knitting? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I have been knitting just a little over a year now. I have no idea how to classify my skill level. Maybe an advanced beginner or a novice intermediate?

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

Yes I do. Right here.

5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)

Hm. I love fruit scents and "baking" scents. As long as they are subtle. Actually I pretty much like most candle scents as long as they are subtle.

I love dark chocolate!

My DH got my spinning wheel for Christmas and I am learning how to spin. I'm not too great at it yet but I LOVE it. I also crochet, sew, bead,stamp, scrapbook, ... I am pretty much game for almost any craft.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

Contemporary Christian Music. I also enjoy listening to classical.

Jewel tones and earth tones. I love colors found in nature. Most of my house is done in toupe, burgundy, and green, so I guess those are favorites. I don't like bright unnatural colors.

I am married to the best guy in the world. (Yesterday was our 8th Wedding anniversary!) I have three children, ages 7, 5, and 3. And two cats.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

Scarves and mittens. I love hats but just look silly in them. I can't stand most ponchos. (I have seen exceptions to that rule, but not too many.)

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Small instant gratification things. My absolute favorite thing to knit are socks.

13. What are you knitting right now?

One pair of trekking socks. (The same ones I was almost finished with earlier but my dear sweet 3 yo decided to frog....somehow I haven't had much motivation to work on them lately.) Afgan squares for a throw my mom and I are working on for a family member that is getting married in September. And a striped crochet tank top. (But you asked about knitting.) I do have two sweaters on the needles (Tubey and To dye for) that I have set aside for now but plan on picking them back up before fall.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?

They are my favorite thing to give and receive!

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

Circulars! I never use straights. I have a Denise set that I love (And a boye set that I don't like.) For any size that I don't have in my Denise set I buy Addis. All of my dpn's are bamboo or rosewood.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

Yes to both.

17. How did you learn to knit?

Combination of books and Knittinghelp.com

18. How old is your oldest UFO?

Probably those socks....Started those just before Christmas.

Nothing that I can think of now. I have s subscription to Family Circle Easy Knitting (or at least I did...I think it ran out) and Spin It.

I would really like to try fair isle.

Yes. 7 1/2" around the ball of my foot and my foot is 8" long.

This room was completely empty Saturday! But I have been busy!

My mom's neightbor was selling the 1950's sofa and it is in GREAT shape. So she asked me if I wanted it. Then today I spent the afternoon at IKEA and picked up the two wicker chairs. Everything else was in my basement just waiting for a home! Next sunny day, I plan on spray painting all of the wicker black to tied it all in together. Find the right print for the wall and I am done!

Catching up...

Illnesses and traveling have kept blogging and knitting at a minimum lately. I am currently without voice so my blog basically is just about my ONLY means of communicating! So while the kids run amock in the house, I figured I would blog abit....after all I can't yell at 'em!

Inspite our illnesses (yes, the whole family has been sick on and off over the last couple weeks), plenty has been going on at our house. I got a much needed break from the house and all the responsibilities that go with it! I went away for the weekend with girlfriends to the APACHE Homeschool Convention! We had a great time and best of all I just about finished my shopping for next year! I came home just in time for Nathan to lose his first tooth. This has been way too long in coming as far as Nathan was concerned! He begged me to take a picture to document this event!

We did manage to get our eggs colored but just in the nick of time! Notice the bags under my eyes? I had been sick all weekend at this point and the kids were so upset that we hadn't colored eggs yet. Being the dedicated mother that I am I ran to the store Saturday night and we finished our egg decorating at 9:30 pm! I was definatly ready for bed at this point! (Oh and please don't notice the cluttered kitchen. Remember I am sick!)
Our Easter was great! I finally felt better...however it was my first day without a voice. (Nathan decided he was too cool for family pictures...I guess he is just too grown up now that he has lost a tooth and all!)
Oh Yeah....and Madison....Notice something different....Her hair! I came down the stairs a couple weeks ago after having had a night out with some girlfriends. My husband asks me to go look in the bathroom before my daughter woke up. She had cut her hair! There was so much blond hair on the floor I was scared to death there wouldn't be any on her head! I was pretty close to right! She had taken some parts to the scalp!

The ups and downs of sock knitting

First the "ups." I finished these socks for my 4 year old daughter! She loves them and would wear them every day if I let her. They are made with Knitpicks simple stripes in 'snapdragon.'
Now for the 'downs.' Remember my Trekking sock I am working on? Last weekend I was able to get a lot of knitting time in and I managed to get the first sock up to the point of shaping the tow. I got up the next morning to find that my three year old had decided to "knit!" He had taken out the needles and unraveled the sock! Almost all of it by the time I caught him!!!!!! I could cry!

A Little Knitting Related Sewing

I had bought some fat quarter bundles a while ago with the plans of making some needle cases for my dpns, crochet hooks and addis, and finally got around to it this past weekend. I wanted logs of pockets so I could add in the needles and hooks I have yet to purchase! I am pretty pleased with how well they turned out.
Here are all the cases I made over the weekend. The wine colored one in the picture above and in this picture is mine. I made the brown one for my mom and the Disney Princess one is for my 5 yo daughters paint brushes. I was surprised at how quickly they were to make. I did all of them in one afternoon.

I finally finished the sleeves to Tubey. Now I need to pick up stitches along the back and underarms to start on the body. This part is a bit tricker than I thought it would be. I have now ripped it out three time!

Looks like I am on the verge of a new obsession! I have tried crochet a few times. I actually tried to learn crochet before I learned to knit, but I just didn't get it. I loved Debbie Stoller's Stitch N Bitch book when I was first learning how to knit. The way she explains things just seem to make sense even when I couldn't make sense of other "how-to" books. Well that seems to hold true for this book as well. It finally makes sense! And there are some really cute patterns in here! Can't wait to try some!

The Amy Project

I usually say I am a self taught knitter, but that is not entirely true. I was able to complete my first couple projects with a lot of help from Amy Finlay, who has created an amazing with website,KnittingHelp, with tons of fabulous "how-to" videos that were priceless to me in the beginning. For the last few months many of the talented knitters that Amy has "taught" have been secretly planning and organizing a gift of love to thank her. We each made an afghan square that was collected and stitched into queen sized afghan.

This is the square I created. We had so many squares given by so many knitters that we had left overs to make pillows. My square was used in one of the three pillows that was made for her.

All of the squares were collected in Chicago and then seamed together. Dotmom offered up her house for a seaming party and a number of us got together and spent the day buried in afghan squares and yummy food!

The finished afghan was just about the prettiest one I have seen. And huge! This is Amy standing on her sofa to get the entire afghan in the picture!

After finishing the sleeve I still need to block it, seem it, and lastly knit the hood. Since this is for the Knitting Olympics I need to get this done by Sunday. Earlier this week I didn't think I would finish...but I am now seeing the light at the end of this tunnel. I am looking forward to not only finishing my first ever sweater...but seeing if it actually fits my daughter!

Vicki Homeschools Too!

I think I have mentioned before that I homeschool my three children (well I guess my oldest two children as the baby is only 2) Since we have started homeschooling last year, we have done all of our work in the kitchen and family room. I have never liked this. It meant science experiements littering my kitchen counters, workbooks, books and other school supplies all in plain view from anywhere in the main living areas of the house and no easy way to store them. We did all of our schooling downstairs because the baby would be napping while we did school. (This made life very easy.) Just around the New Year, Carson decided he no longer needs his nap (I disagree, but I digress.) So now he is up and we can use the upstairs for school. So the kids and I worked in my upstairs office to make it a school room.

We are all thrilled with our new space. The school mess is stored behind a closed door. The kids love spending time in their new school room. The only downside is that I now share my office with three children. But hey you can't have everything.

I just got a new book!!!

I have realized lately thatt aside from a pair of socks and slippers I have never knit anything for the men in my life. I am forever making pretty scarves and ponchos and the like for my daughter. So I saw this book while I was in the library the other day and checked it out. I absolutely loved the sweaters in this book and would love to see my husband and sons in all of them! (Oh to find the time.) Anyways I handed the book to my husband to ask him if he would like me to make one for him. He shrugged and didn't really look at it. After asking a few times he finally looked at it. Occasionally he would lean over and say "You can make that?" And I would just smile and nod. When he finished he handed me the book and said "You may want to get that book!" So I did! Here are two of my favorites from the book. This one I would LOVE to make for my both my little boys. (There is also a pattern for an adult but my husband won't wear a vest....(Silly boy.)

This is by far my favorite (today at least) for my husband.

Knitting Olympics Sweater

Wow it has been a while since I have posted! I was having some major computer issues. It had to be repaired twice...hopefully we will be set from here on out!

Now for my progress on Madison's Sweater for the Knitting Olympics.

I have finished the front of my first ever sweater and my first ever Intarsia project. I definately learned some things about intarsia do's and don'ts in doing this project. I tried carrying the main color yarn and that definatly was not the best choice. It still looks ok...but it would have looked better if I hadn't. Madison loves it which is what counts.

I am half way through one sleeve. Don't know if this one is going to be done by the end of the Olympics or not. I am sure glad I choose a child'd sweater!

Trekking Sock

I don't think I will ever finish this sock. I thought it would be fun to knit this sock with size 0 needles. I have no idea why...but it just seemed like fun at the time. Maybe I will finish by next winter.....

Kool-Aid Dying

I have been wanting to try dying my own yarn. So now that I have this little hank of undyed yarn I spun myself I figured now was the perfect time to give it a shot. My 4 yo daughter and I made a trip to the grocery store and she picked out a few packets of Tropical Punch Kool-Aid. Here are our results:

The Usual Suspects

We have had a series of attacks on yarn in my house over the past few weeks. Up until now my yarn has been able to rest in peace in a number of baskets through out my family room. For about the last three weeks that has all changed. It started with the wonderful angora that I bought to make a pair of booties for a girlfriends baby. Knowing that the smell of bunnies might by tempting to my feline friends, I put this in a wicker drawered cabinet I keep some of my knitting supplies in. The next morning I found pieces of angora all over the house. The "suspect" had to work her paw through the opening on the draw and pull it open to get to the angora...Every night since I have found at least one ball of yarn that had been "stalked" and "attacked" in various areas of the house.

Here are the Usual Supects:

Oliver: Male, orange tabby, 9 years old, sweet but not too bight.

Ophelia: Female, Black Siamese Mix, 9 years old, opinionated and scrappy, way too smart for her own good. (See that look in her eye!)

I had my guess but this morning I caught her in the act! Ophelia was about to "kill" the hank of yarn I had handspun the day before!

Unfortnuatly Ophelia doesn't feel she needs to follow our rules and I don't suspect the warning I gave her will do any good at all. I have tried a ton of things to keep her out of the yarn. I am presently looking for some type of inexpensive container with a lid that is fairly attractive (remember this sits in my family room) that will protect my yarn from Ophelia, the serial yarn killer.

Knitting Olympics

Well I have decided to join the ranks of knitters participating in the Knitting Olympics. My 4 yo daughter has fallen in love with this sweater from Knit Picks. I know a sweater for a 4 year old is not in the same category with many of the adult fair isle or aran sweaters I have been seeing in other's blogs...However since I have never actually completed a sweater yet...I think it a sufficient enough challenge for me!

Knitted Spa Basket

I still haven't exchanged gifts with a very good friend of mine. I am hoping to see her Thursday so I whipped up this little spa basket.

I made the face cloths with Lion Brand Cotton in Natural and each one is a different pattern. I love how well this turned out that I made another one for another friend as well...I may need to make one for myself!

My First Singles

I did it! I made yarn. This is my first somewhat successful attempt and making yarn on my new spinning wheel. My first few attempts resulted in a huge ball of fiber. But once it clicked I was able to fill up two bobbins. I didn't ply this yarn. I was happy enough with this success and didn't want to tempt fate! I will save plying for another day.

Now to figure out what color to dye it and what it wants to be...if I have enough for anything.

Favorite Gift Knit

I made probably a dozen pairs of these clogs for Christmas this year.

Everyone's reaction was so much fun because they were so huge. I could literally see people trying to figure out how to compliment something I had obviously made myself, while at the same time wondering what the heck they were!

Socks Socks Socks

Probably my favorite things to knit are socks! I just LOVE knitting socks. These are the first pair of socks I made! (my son picked out the yarn) I was really quite proud of myself. Since then I have been hooked.

This is another early pair of socks made for me, with Knit Picks Simple Stripes. I currently am working on a pair of Trekking Socks. That has been slow going. I will post some progress pictures later (as in once I have made a little more progress.)

A New Blog

The first post is always the hardest to write. I wanted to start this blog to share my interest in knitting, spinning, and books with anyone who is interested in sharing. Last summer I started a blog to record our homeschooling and began filling it up with knitting. So I figured I would put my "yarn art" where it belongs...in a blog of its own. I began knitting nearly 9 months ago and quickly became completely engrossed in all things related to yarn. I had been interested in knitting for a while and then last spring took a tumble down the stairs and ended up with my ankle in a cast and hopping around on crutches. I figured with all this time on the sofa, it was the perfect time to learn to knit. I had my husband wheel me through Joann's and bought some Lion Brand Homespun (no one bothered to tell me what a horrible yarn this was to work with.) and some bamboo needles. I logged onto Knitting Help and taught myself to knit. I now have stashes of yarn through out the house and more projects going than I care to count and I am loving it!
This Christmas, my wonderful husband gave me a brand new Ashford Traditional Spinning wheel and now I can delve into the world of spinning my own yarn. Spinning hasn't been as easy to catch onto as knitting had been, but it seems to be clicking. I have my first little "skein" waiting to be dyed and it actually looks like yarn! Now just to figure out what to do with it!
